Chapter 26: An Unexpected Disruption

Abel poured the spring water slowly into the crystal tumbler, enjoying the way the fluid sounded in the purity of the container.

Beautiful, he thought, lowering the bottle, the glass clinking against the silver tray. Abel lifted the tumbler to his lips and took a sip of the cool liquid. A smile spread across his face at the sweetness of the water. This is magnificent.

A sharp rap at the door disrupted his contemplation, but Abel’s smile remained on his face as he said, “Enter.”

The door opened, and David hurried in, a look of concern on his face.

David’s expression erased Abel’s smile.

“What’s wrong?” Abel asked, placing the tumbler on the tray beside the bottle.

“Subject B, sir,” David said with consternation, “he’s on the move.”

Abel shook his head, confused. “Why is that an issue, David? He has the freedom to move about the Village. We haven’t put Subject G in with them yet, so we can’t expect any involvement on that end.”

“It’s the Drake house, sir,” David explained. “Subject B has gone to it.”

Abel stood up and led the way out of the room. He went to his control room, brought up the cameras for the Drake house and sat down.

Subject B was climbing the stairs to the second floor, his iron chain swinging freely from his right hand.

“What are you doing?” Abel asked the screen. “Why are you in there?”

He tried to think what could have attracted the man to the building in the first place. Unlike the other buildings, the larder in the Drake house was only sparsely stocked. Nor was there anything worth having. When Abel furnished the home, he did so with some of the items seized by the police after the murders.

“What do you want?” Abel asked, sitting back and folding his arms over his chest.

Subject B reached the second floor, walked confidently down the hallway and turned into Mr. Eli Drake’s bedroom.
